Kooskia/Kamiah Lolo Motorway (Powell, MT to Weippe, ID) If you want to get as close to the original Lewis and Clark Trail as you can possibly get - the Lolo Motorway is it. This is the most primitive portion of the Trail-left just the way nature intended. This is 100 miles of one-lane dirt road. Travel trailers and RVs are not recommend. Click here for more information Weippe (pronounced wee-ipe) In 1805, Lewis and Clark had their first encounter with Nez Perce Indians on the Weippe Prairie. *The Timber Inn Weippe and the Ni Mii Pu Located near the town of Weippe on Idaho Highway 11, the site is the first meeting place of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the Nez Perce people. Lewis and Clark Campsites Trail 25 begins .5 miles east of Pheasant Camp at the junction of Forest Roads 100 and 500. Visitors can hike 3 miles to Lewis/Clark Grove, or drive one mile east on Road 500 to Road 520, then drive 1.5 miles on road 520. At Lewis/Clark Grove, Trail 25 continues 5 miles to Small Prairie Camp, or drive 7 miles east on Road 500 from its junction with Road 520. Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended to continue east on Road 500. Weippe Discovery Center Musselshell Meadows Pierce - oldest city in Idaho The city of Pierce was named for E.D. Pierce who discovered the first gold in Idaho in 1860. The Pierce Courthouse, erected in 1862, is Idaho's oldest governmental building. Pierce is rich in history and outdoor adventures. Winters are active with the Winter Carnival and Bald Mountain Ski area. The first weekend in August, the community celebrates it's early beginnings with 1860 Days. Gold Rush Historic Byway Chinese cemetery J. Howard Bradbury Logging Museum Located in a 1928 cabin at Pierce, this museum is a source of community pride, preserving the local mining and logging history, as well as other artifacts. The grounds are adjacent to a park with a picnic area and Idaho9's first public building, the 1862 Old Shoshone County Courthouse (Idaho's first County Courthouse). Special group tours are available. Open Friday and Saturday from mid-June to mid-October. |
