Along the Lewis & Clark Trail

Feature Article By Cheeta Brown

Historic map courtesy of Lewis & Clark Exhibit at MonticelloAn historical exhibit, put together by the Missouri History Museum, put in motion the official observance of the commemoration of the Lewis and Clark Expedition the first of January. The exhibit will follow the trail of Lewis and Clark throughout 2004, 2005 and 2006 stopping throughout the trip enabling interested persons to view the artifacts collected by the museum.

Among the items that will be on display are Captain William Clark’s elk skin field journal and rifle, a letter of credit President Thomas Jefferson wrote to Meriwether Lewis, a brass and wood telescope Lewis took on the trip, maps, a woodpecker specimen still intact and colorful, preserved during their stay in Idaho. This is the only animal specimen, one in numerous specimens preserved by Lewis that remains intact today. Also on display will be a woodpecker preserved by Lewis.

St. Louis was chosen for the kick-off event since this is where Lewis and Clark spent five months in early 1804 making plans, hiring members of the Corp and purchasing many of the supplies which would sustain them throughout their adventure.

President Jefferson charged his one-time secretary, Lewis, to explore and document the vast territory to the west including the flora and fauna, the customs and possible trade opportunities with Native Americans living along the route and the possibility of a water route to the Pacific Ocean. The Corp of Discovery left St. Louis in 1804 and landed back in St. Louis on September 23, 1806.

Carolyn Gilman, curator for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial, spent seven years tracking down hundreds of artifacts and authenticating each one, eventually finding items in more than 50 museums and private collections. In the process, Gilman wrote a companion volume “Lewis and Clark: Across the Divide” to accompany the exhibit.

Lewis and Clark picture housed at Monticello. The exhibit will be in Kamiah, Idaho, September 16-26, 2005. In addition to the exhibit, titled Corp 2, area school districts, the Nez Perce Tribe, the United States Forest Service and the communities of Kamiah, Kooskia, and Orofino will collaborate on special programs for the week the national exhibit will be in the Kamiah valley.

Mark your calendars, wherever you are along the Lewis and Clark Trail, and keep an eye out for the date the exhibit is in your area.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
