Montana-Idaho border
Colt Killed Creek

You are welcomed to Idaho as you cross the Montana-Idaho border and gaze southward across the beautiful Packer Meadow. Here you will find a visitor center and in the winter a popular cross-country skiing and snowmobile area.

Like the Corp of Discovery you will drop to the scenic Kooskooskee (Lochsa River) to the present site of the Powell Ranger Station. You will have the advantage of a modern highway but Captain Clark wrote the "road" was "Excessively bad & Thickly Strowed with falling timber….Steep & Stoney."

Heart of the Monster

Issue #7

Present day Kamiah, Idaho - along the Clearwater RiverAs you continue your journey down the rugged and beautiful Lochsa River canyon, parallel to the actual ridge top trail of the Corp of Discovery, you will arrive at the little settlement of Lowell, Idaho. Here there are limited services but meals and beds are available at this resort area. Here also the Lochsa joins the Selway River forming the Middlefork of the Clearwater River. The Selway is classified as a National Wild and Scenic River. The Indian word Sel-wah means “smooth water” but this water has some of the more difficult rapids of any western river during its short rafting and kayaking season.

As you travel on west along the Middlefork Clearwater River RVers will find a nights rest at U.S. Forest Service Wild Goose Campground or have a picnic and swim at Three Devils picnic area.
