Kooskia/Kamiah Lewiston is the site of Idaho's first capital, which was later moved to Boise and is the only seaport in Idaho. Enjoy walking, jogging or biking on the 22 miles of trails along the confluence of the Clearwater and Snake rivers. Lewiston is the gateway to the Hell's Canyon Recreation area providing a variety of recreational activities including hunting, fishing, jet boating, whitewater rafting, sandy beaches for swimming and water skiing. Referred to as the "Banana Belt" due to the mile winter temperatures, golf courses are normally open year-round. During the holiday season the valley is lit with elaborate lighting displays.
Nez Perce County Historical Museum Open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10am to 4pm. Exhibits reflect the chronological highlights of Nez Perce County history from antiquity to the present. Hands-on activities are available for young guests. * Hell's Gate State Park - Located at Lewiston, this site features a new Lewis and Clark botany display, camping and picnic areas along the Snake River and a recreational vehicle dump station. * Lewis and Clark Center for Arts and History Open Mondays through Fridays from 11am to 4 pm. Visitors are invited to explore Chinese at the Confluence at Lewiston's Beuk Aie Temple Museum and the CenterPieces Gift Shop. On October 10, 1805, the Corps of Discovery entered what is now the state of Washington located on US Highway 12 at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers. Of special interest at Clarkston is the 300-foot Lewis and Clark Timeline with highlights from the expedition and replicated drawings from its journals, located at the Hells canyon Resort and Marina. Clarkston, named in honor of William Clark, began as a ferry landing on the west side of the Snake River. Chief Timothy State Park Located in Chief Timothy State Park, near the original site of a Nez Perce Indian village which was occupied for 8,000 years, is the Alpowai Interpretive Center. Visitors can see exhibits about the geology and history of the site, including the meeting between Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and the Nez Perce Indians. Visitors can enjoy the majestic scenery, an inviting fresh-water shoreline and excellent camping. Located on US Highway 12, 8 miles west of Clarkston, Washington. Lapwai is the home of the Nez Perce Tribal Office. Idaho's first military fort was built here in 1862. Traces of the original fort are still visible. Nez Perce artifacts and historical information are displayed at the Spalding Visitor Center.
