Riggins, Idaho

Salmon River Chamber of Commerce

The Salmon River at spring run-off has some of the biggest whitewater found anywhere. The Salmon River is the largest free-flowing river in the continental United States, and when the spring thaw comes, NO dams exist to hold back the high water.

Although this portion of highway wasn't directly traveled by the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the area is full of history. The Nez Perce War was fought in 1877 at nearby White Bird where the U.S. Army was defeated by the  Nez Perce warriors.

Not only is the area surrounded by history, it is nature's playground. The Salmon River at spring run-off has some of the biggest whitewater found anywhere. The white sandy beaches are breathtaking. The Salmon River is the largest free-flowing river in the continental United States, and when the spring thaw comes, NO dams exist to hold back the high water.
