The Nez Perce were the original residents of the Camas Prairie. They harvested the camas root, for which the land is named.

Grangeville

Grangeville, Idaho is known as "The Gateway to Wilderness"In 1895 homesteaders began arriving and establishing farms and ranches. Grangeville, known as "The Gateway to Wilderness",  is the largest community on the Camas Prairie and is the Idaho County Seat. Only minutes from town are five wilderness areas, 4 national forests and five rivers providing abundant opportunity for white water rafting, fishing, jet boating, skiing, hunting, camping and hiking. In town you will find a movie theatre, swimming pool, parks, restaurants and Historical Museum. International participants compete in Border Days on the 4th of July - Idaho's oldest rodeo.

Bicentennial Historical Museum preserves and presents the history of Idaho County. Exhibits include an exceptional display of local Nez Perce Indian artifacts, a complete mining exhibit, pioneer life displays, and a mammoth tusk from the 1994 Tolo Lake dig.

Cottonwood

Cottonwood is the second largest community on the Camas Prairie.Located 55 miles southeast of Lewiston on Highway 95, Cottonwood is the second largest community on the Camas Prairie. The history dates back to 1862. Cottonwood was originally a way station for the freight and stage lines. The town comes to life the third weekend in July for the annual Buggy Whip Days. Main Street is closed off for the festivities.

*The Historical Museum at St. Gertrude The Historical Museum at St. Gertrude is one of the oldest continuously operating museums in the Inland Northwest, having been in existence for over 70 years. The collection represents the settlement of Idaho including the Nez Perce influence; the Lewis and Clark connection; the mining, ranching, farming, and logging eras; and the history of the Sisters of the Monastery of St. Gertrude.

Nezperce

Nezperce is full of history and Native American culture, It is the Lewis County Seat and sits in the middle of the Nezperce Prairie. The land surrounding Nezperce was once the summer camping grounds for the Nez Perce people. The Seven Tepees can be seen from the top of the Nezperce Grade. These hills hold religious significance to the Nez Perce Tribe.

Craigmont

Craigmont is named after Colonel William Craig, Idaho's first permanent white settler.

Winchester

A large replica of a Winchester rifle hangs above Main Street as a reminder of how this town got its name. Winchester Lake and State Park feature year-round fishing and recreation.
